On Environmentalism
In an era of mass consumerism and rapid industrial growth, environmental impact is often overlooked. This trend, evident since the early nineteenth century, has often resulted in irreversible consequences, which are only fully recognized in hindsight. This policy paper explores the environmental consequences of a seemingly simple maintenance task in Bergen County, the sweeping and redistribution of leaves. While leaf removal is often considered a necessary task for any public space, it disrupts natural nutrient cycling, depletes soil health, and contributes to declines in local ecosystems. Through an analysis of potential impacts of this practice on soil quality, biodiversity, and water retention, this paper highlights the need for alternative strategies and approaches, including leaving leaves on-stem and composting. Lastly, policy recommendations are provided to foster environmentally sustainable practices that support ecological resilience.

On Political Polarity
In a robust era of great thinkers, intellectuals, and scholars, one issue seems to divide our country in two, politics. This paper explores the growing issue of political polarization in Bergen County, analyzing the factors contributing to ideological divides among residents and their impacts on local governance, community cohesion, and public discourse. In recent years, political polarization has intensified, driven by factors such as media fragmentation, social media echo chambers, and partisan gerrymandering. The paper examines how these divides affect decision-making processes, hinder cross-party collaboration, and contribute to social fragmentation. Policy recommendations focus on fostering dialogue, encouraging electoral reforms, and promoting civic education to bridge divides and strengthen democratic engagement within the county.

On Tech Disparity
In an age of digital technology, shouldn’t everyone have equal access to our growing digital nation? This paper examines the digital divide in Bergen County, focusing on the unequal access to technology and its impact on education, employment, and social inclusion. Despite the rapid growth of digital technology, significant disparities persist between various socioeconomic groups, rural and urban areas, and different age demographics. This divide exacerbates existing inequalities and limits opportunities for those without reliable internet access, modern devices, or digital literacy. Through an analysis of the current state of technology access in the county, this paper highlights the social, economic, and educational consequences of digital exclusion. Policy recommendations emphasize expanding infrastructure, providing digital literacy programs, and ensuring equitable access to devices for all residents.
